Mercedes’ new E-Class, to be available mid-summer 2009 for around $55,000, will boast their new drowsy driver monitoring system, plus lane assist, blind spot assist, night view assist, and radar-assisted braking systems which were first made available on the S-Class.

Nissan Offering CARWINGS to Aftermarket Devices
In an interesting development for the “connected vehicle” vision, Nissan has started providing its popular CARWINGS navigation and connected services system to aftermarket car navigation devices in Japan. This is the first time a car company’s proprietary service – previously available only as a new car purchase – has been made available in off-the-shelf navigation devices. Sanyo Electric has already included CARWINGS in their portable navigation device.
The softening of barriers between car companies and the aftermarket industry is expected to continue to accelerate, creating more data pipes and data sources going forward.

Lexus RX350 Boasts Smarter Headlights
Going a step beyond adaptive headlights that swivel in concert with steering wheel movement, this new Lexus (selling historically at a level of 80-100,00 units per year) has “intelligent front steering” that estimates where the vehicle will be in three seconds and moves the lights in that direction. Illuminating the curve as you approach it, rather than the roadside. Pretty slick. How do they do it? Camera-based image processing? On-board map support? We’ll let you know once we find out…..
