Delphi Showcases IV Systems and More at Frankfurt Auto Show   |   The 60th International Motor Show / Passenger Cars (called IAA) in Frankfurt, Germany, is consistently a major venue for car-makers and suppliers to introduce new models and new technology.  Delphi is using this opportunity to unveil a range of new technologies that use electronics and sophisticated software to help address issues such as safety, occupant comfort and a vehicle's impact on the environment. Of major note is their new Lane Departure Warning System.

Toyota Wows the World with Automated Parking   |   Toyota announced this month the Japanese launch of the all-new Prius hybrid passenger vehicle.  With this vehicle, Toyota claims two “world firsts” in the intelligent vehicles arena:  steering-assisted Vehicle Stability Control system (S-VSC) and Intelligent Parking Assist.

Stress-Free Driving for Tomorrow – German INVENT Program Releases Mid-Point Review Report   |   INVENT (the intelligent traffic and user-oriented technology project) is a German research initiative with the goal of making future traffic safer and more efficient.  To this end, the partners are cooperating in the development of novel driver assistance systems, knowledge and information technologies, and solutions for efficient traffic management.  For the IV community, the work in INVENT represents the leading edge in many areas – definitely one to watch.  The research team recently presented their mid-term results to their government sponsors.

NHTSA Publishes Priority Plan For Vehicle Safety Rulemaking   |   On July 21, the US Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) published its plan for vehicle safety rulemaking priorities.  The plan highlights the agency’s highest priority rulemaking actions aimed at addressing the most significant vehicle safety needs.

Technology Development for Army Unmanned Ground Vehicles   |   The National Academies Press in the US recently  published this book, reviewing the massive amount of activity in UGVs that has been sponsored by the US military, and providing a synopsis of the current state-of-the-art.  Subjects covered include operational and technical requirements, review of current UGV efforts, autonomous behavior technologies, and roadmaps to the future.  They’ll sell it to you, but you can also read it online at www.nap.edu/books/0309086205/html

  UK Speed Behavior Research Trials Beginning
   |   In another chapter in evaluation and development of Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA), the UK Department for Transport has announced that new research trials have begun in Leeds which are looking at how 80 drivers behave when their speeds are controlled.

   New Annual Report Released:  NHTSA Automotive Collision Avoidance System Field Test   |   Jack Ference of the USDOT National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has notified IVsource that the third ACAS Field Operational Test Annual Report is now available on NHTSA's website, covering program accomplishments in 2002.

  Minnesotans Show Off Intelligent Buses and Plows at ITS America Annual Meeting
   |   In the spirit of "better late then never," IVsource reviews  the recent annual meeting of the Intelligent Transportation Society of America, held during May in Minneapolis.  Included is a review (plus pics and video!) of vehicle demonstrations offered by the University of Minnesota Intelligent Vehicles Laboratory.

  US National IVI Meeting -- Impressive Technical Progress and Hot Vehicles   |  
The cognoscenti of intelligent road vehicle R&D in the US came together during June 24-26 in Washington DC for the 3rd National Intelligent Vehicle Initiative Meeting.  The conference, attended by about two hundred engineers, executives, and researchers, was sponsored by the US Department of Transportation.  The purpose of the meeting was to highlight the results of their ongoing Intelligent Vehicle Initiative (IVI) program, as well as to re-affirm the government-industry partnerships that are a cornerstone of the program.  In addition, an impressive set of demonstrations were offered on the grounds of the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Turner-Fairbanks Highway Research Center.  IVsource was there and provides this comprehensive report of both the conference and demonstrations.
