Impressive Technical Progress Seen on Many Fronts: Experts Gather Again for IV2003

Sponsored by the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Council, the 2003 Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV2003) attracted about 100 technical experts and academic researchers from around the world to Columbus, Ohio during June 9-11.  Impressive progress was evident in many areas, including machine vision, data fusion, and inter-vehicle communications.

Chauffeur Shows Off:  Demos of Electronic Tow-Bar Functions Dazzle Crowd in Italy

As the culmination of over three years worth of work, the CHAUFFEUR 2 team held a public demonstration of their advanced driver assistance systems for heavy trucks.   Both futuristic (platooning ) and near-term (CHAUFFEUR Assistant) functions were demonstrated on the IVECO test track in Balocco, Italy in early May.  Invited guests included the European Commission, the French Ministry of Transport, the French labs LIVIC and INRIA, MAN trucks, Centro Research Fiat, and international researchers.  IVsource was there, too, and here’s a synopsis of the action.

The Changing Face of Telematics   |  
Was telematics “roadkill” on the information super highway; an artifact from the technology boom of the 1990s?  Or is it still a promising new field to provide connected services to vehicles?  While the hype that once surrounded telematics is gone, there still remains a passionate belief within the industry that the vision of telematics can be recreated to hold onto a bright future.  One of the believers is telematics expert Kevin Davis, who provided this article to IVsource.  This extensive article discuses where the telematics industry has been and where it is headed; it defines telematics, examines the telematics sub-markets, discusses the role of the wireless carrier, presents related standardization efforts, compares telematics in the US and Europe, and highlights a few trends to watch.

US Supreme Court Decision Changes Landscape for Tort Liability
   |   A recent -- and quite probably landmark -- US Supreme Court decision limiting the size of punitive damage awards could have major implications for US business.  The decision is likely to affect automotive tort liability cases quite positively for manufacturers, and alter the trade-offs that car-makers must perform in order to bring advanced driver assistance systems to the market.

NHTSA and Delphi Technology Focusing on Distracted Drivers   |  
A recent NHTSA report provides the results of a national survey focusing on distracted driving (including cell phone use) and drowsy driving.  To better deal with distracted drivers, the US government has joined with a team led by Delphi to develop an adaptive driver workload manager in a $6M project.

ParkShuttle II Premiers in Monaco    |   The ParkShuttle II is scheduled to debut during the ‘Salon International des Véhicules Électriques et Hybrides de Monte-Carlo 2003,’ evoking memories of the first-generation ParkShuttle: the first automated road vehicle to be put into public service, in the mid-1990s.

Netherlands:  TNO and University of Twente Open New Center for Applications of Integrated Driver Assistance   |   A new knowledge center was opened in February which promises to cover some new ground in the Driver Assistance arena:  the Applications of Integrated Driver Assistance (AIDA) center is a joint venture of the Dutch research institute TNO and the University of Twente.  The center’s goals, mission, and initial research aims are described in this article.
