since January 2001 and has decided to specify the product on all new
truck purchases.

Develops "Pre-Crash Safety" System
| Toyota Motor
Corporation announced recently that it has developed "Pre-crash
Safety," an innovative system that reduces collision injury by
foreseeing unavoidable collisions to preemptively activate safety
devices. Toyota plans to install this system in new vehicle models
that will be introduced next year.

Seeking Proposals for Testing of Heavy Truck Electronically-Controlled
Braking | On August 12, the US
Department of Transportation issued a Request for Proposals to
conduct a field operational test (FOT) of heavy trucks equipped with
electronically-controlled braking systems (ECBS).

Seeks Public Comment on Priority Plan For Vehicle Safety Rulemaking
| The National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration has
issued a formal request for public comment on its plan for
vehicle safety rulemaking priorities. The plan includes the agency’s
highest priority rulemaking actions that fall within the immediate
four-year time frame. Included
are active safety systems to address road departures, driver
distraction, and car-truck crashes.

Automotive Announces Driver Assistance Systems Roadmap | TRW
Automotive describes an aggressive strategy to pull together its
strengths in braking, steering, and suspension systems to roll out a
wide array of Driver Assistance Systems in coming years.
A key starting point: introduction of their radar-based
Adaptive Cruise Control system on Volkswagen vehicles.

Seeks to Partner with Industry to Field Test Electronically
Controlled Braking Systems | As
part of the USDOT Intelligent Vehicle Initiative (IVI) program, the
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is moving
forward with plans to award cooperative agreements to teams for
testing of Electronically Controlled Braking Systems (ECBS).
Request for Applications is expected in mid-August.

2002 Showcases French Accomplishments in Smart Car Technology |
With
Demo 2002, held June 20-21 in Versailles, the French have placed
themselves solidly on the map of advanced R&D in the Intelligent
Vehicle domain. The
demo, in conjunction with the IEEE Intelligent Vehicles 2002
technical conference, provided an opportunity for French research
labs and commercial developers to strut their stuff.
Along for the ride (and the riding) were a wide-ranging set
of additional demonstration vehicles from Germany, the Netherlands,
Spain, and the United Kingdom.
