eSafety Lyon Establishes a New Vision for Vehicle-Highway Cooperation   |   With an array of government officials, industry visionaries, vehicle safety experts, and highway safety experts in attendance, the eSafety conference held September 16-18 in Lyon, France brought the ITS safety emphasis to a new level.  IVsource was there and offers this review and perspective.

Transport Canada to Study Driver Assist for Older Drivers   |   Transport Canada is sponsoring new research to test whether advanced in-car technology, such as infrared monitors and audio warning systems, could reduce the number of crashes involving elderly drivers -- considered a growing road-accident threat.

TRW Announces Interior Occupant Sensing Using Stereo Vision
   |  
In what may be the first automotive application of stereo vision sensing, TRW has announced that it is developing a revolutionary interior vision system with the capability to accurately sense occupant size and position and deliver real-time reactions to protect passengers.

Cargo Transporters Specifies Iteris' AutoVueTM Lane Guidance System on All New Truck Purchases   |   After extensive driving experience, Cargo Transporters has reported improved safety and driver satisfaction as a result of using Iteris' AutoVueTM Lane Guidance system. The trucking company has been an AutoVue customer since January 2001 and has decided to specify the product on all new truck purchases.

   |   ITS America achieved a key goal last month with Suzanne Murtha taking over the helm as Director of Telematics & IVI.

Volkswagen Launches Microwave-Based ACC in Europe   |   Volkswagen has joined the ranks of vehicle manufacturers offering Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) in Europe.  Others already in the game at this time include BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes Benz, and Renault.

Toyota Develops "Pre-Crash Safety" System   |   Toyota Motor Corporation announced recently that it has developed "Pre-crash Safety," an innovative system that reduces collision injury by foreseeing unavoidable collisions to preemptively activate safety devices.  Toyota plans to install this system in new vehicle models that will be introduced next year.  IVsource describes the system components and provides a perspective on the implications of Toyota’s move.

USDOT Seeking Proposals for Testing of Heavy Truck Electronically-Controlled Braking   |   On August 12, the US Department of Transportation issued a Request for Proposals to conduct a field operational test (FOT) of heavy trucks equipped with electronically-controlled braking systems (ECBS).  IVsource provides a quick-look overview of the project envisioned by the government, as well as requirements for proposers.

AssistWare Licenses Lane Tracking Technology to Visteon   |   After 17 months of negotiation, AssistWare Technology, Inc. of Wexford, Pennsylvania has completed a licensing agreement with Visteon Corporation, which will promote Assistware’s lane tracking technology to vehicle manufacturers.

NHTSA Seeks Public Comment on Priority Plan For Vehicle Safety Rulemaking   |   The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has  issued a formal request for public comment on its plan for vehicle safety rulemaking priorities. The plan includes the agency’s highest priority rulemaking actions that fall within the immediate four-year time frame.  Included are active safety systems to address road departures, driver distraction, and car-truck crashes.

TRW Automotive Announces Driver Assistance Systems Roadmap   |   TRW Automotive describes an aggressive strategy to pull together its strengths in braking, steering, and suspension systems to roll out a wide array of Driver Assistance Systems in coming years.  A key starting point: introduction of their radar-based Adaptive Cruise Control system on Volkswagen vehicles.

FMCSA Seeks to Partner with Industry to Field Test Electronically Controlled Braking Systems
   |   As part of the USDOT Intelligent Vehicle Initiative (IVI) program, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is moving forward with plans to award cooperative agreements to teams for testing of Electronically Controlled Braking Systems (ECBS).  Request for Applications is expected in mid-August.

Demo 2002 Showcases French Accomplishments in Smart Car Technology   | 
With Demo 2002, held June 20-21 in Versailles, the French have placed themselves solidly on the map of advanced R&D in the Intelligent Vehicle domain.  The demo, in conjunction with the IEEE Intelligent Vehicles 2002 technical conference, provided an opportunity for French research labs and commercial developers to strut their stuff.  Along for the ride (and the riding) were a wide-ranging set of additional demonstration vehicles from Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
