the many policy papers generated by public entities in Europe, this
White Paper, published September 2001 by the European Commission, has
been referred to many times by our European colleagues with respect to
the future of Advanced Driver Support Systems (ADAS) and Intelligent
Vehicle-Highway Systems (IVHS). Therefore, IVsource decided it would be
valuable to “take a look” and see what implications this paper may
hold for our areas of technical and policy focus relating to intelligent
vehicles.

Assistive Systems for Transit Buses -- University of Minnesota Going
Strong with $700K in Grant Funding
| Researchers
at the Intelligent vehicles lab at the University of Minnesota have
successfully garnered at least $700K in research funding from USDOT to
study and implement driver assistive technologies for bus drivers. Work
includes requirements analysis and prototype system development and
evaluation in a real-world environment.

Project Underway in 12 European Cities
| Ten
million Euro project devoted to the use of individual automated vehicles
which run on city streets as an alternative to the use of private cars
and as a complement to public mass transportation. Twelve European
cities are participating, along with research labs and technology
providers .

GM, NHTSA Move into Phase II of ACAS Forward Collision Warning Project

After extensive development and testing, GM and government
engineers have certified a functional prototype for the Advanced
Collision Avoidance System (ACAS) -- a $35M joint partnership of General
Motors, Delphi Automotive Systems, and the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration (NHTSA). In
